How much does an interior designer cost? Anything from a few hundred dollars for a consultation to tens of thousands for a whole home, which is why the question is so hard to answer. The price depends less on the designer's talent than on what you ask them to do. This guide gives published 2026 figures for the US and the UK, explains each fee model, and shows how to compare quotes fairly.

How much does an interior designer cost in the US?

Angi and HomeAdvisor both report a national average of roughly US$8,550 per project for 2026. That is higher than Thumbtack's range because it includes larger projects such as whole homes and renovations.

Is the designer licensed? According to the Council for Interior Design Qualification, 29 US states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico regulate interior design, through title acts, practice acts or both, usually based on the NCIDQ exam. Ask whether your designer is certified if structural or code-related work is involved.

The five ways interior designers charge

Hourly. Best for advice, small rooms or a design you will carry out yourself. Ask for a cap or an estimate of hours.

Flat fee. A fixed price for a defined scope, for example one room from concept to final drawings. Easiest to compare, as long as the scope is written down.

Percentage of the project. Common for whole homes and renovations. The fee grows with the budget, so agree which costs the percentage applies to.

Per square foot or metre. Typical for large spaces and offices. Simple, but check what is included at each stage.

Markup on furniture (cost-plus). The designer buys furniture at trade prices and adds a margin. It can be fair, because trade discounts often offset it, but ask for it to be stated openly.

Many designers combine models, for example a flat design fee plus a markup on purchases.

What changes the price

  • Scope: a single room, a refresh or a full renovation with new layouts.
  • Stages: concept only, or technical drawings, purchasing and site supervision as well.
  • Custom work: bespoke joinery and furniture take more design time.
  • Location and experience: big-city and award-winning studios charge more.
  • How the design is presented: sketches, mood boards or photorealistic 3D visuals. Seeing the room before it is built prevents expensive changes later; see 3D visualization in interior design.

How to compare quotes

Put every quote side by side and check the same points: which stages are included, how many design options and revision rounds, whether site visits and purchasing are part of the fee, how markups work, the payment schedule, and who owns the drawings. If walls or services change, check who is allowed to design that work; see architect vs interior designer.

Prices in other countries follow different rules: Germany uses the HOAI fee regulation, and Turkey's chamber of interior architects publishes minimum fees. The German and Turkish versions of this article explain them.
